This is probably the best of the easily accessible gorges in this part of the MacDonnell Ranges. I was thinking while I was here that often the reality of a place fails to match the expectation. These gorges actually are equal to or better than expectations. The hardness of the desert landscape, the sharpness of the red rock colours and the coolness of the water holes work together to create truly stunning images.
The camp is a trailhead to Sections 11 and 12 of the Larapinta Trail. I did the Mount Sonder Lookout Walk, a distance of about 7km toward the summit at about 1000 metres elevation. Good views west of the MacDonnell Ranges including NT’s highest mountain, Mount Zeil.
